Friday Plot Swap~Two snakes and some gnomes

Friday Plot Swap
Dawn's Plot Swap
Have a plot? Leave one
Need a plot ? Take one
I am feeling kind of random today. So, this swap is a mixed bag. In honor of all the responses I got to my gecko post yesterday, I've included two "EWWW"-inducing stories and, of course, gnomes. Because everything goes better with gnomes.

Player startled by snake in helmet

Gravette High School senior Darrick Strzelecki said he felt something odd in his helmet during practice Tuesday, but thought it was only a tangled lock of hair or sweat beading up as the team worked on extra points.

It was a 10-12 inch snake! Kind of makes my gecko look small and inconsequential, huh? Imagine working that into a creepy, stalker plot. Psycho girl puts snake in boy's helmet.

Snake slithers out of moving SUV's hood

Rachel Fisher said she was driving the sport-utility vehicle on Sam Cooper Boulevard with her husband...when the snake emerged from beneath the hood and started slithering on the windshield.

"and that's why the car is totaled, officer."
This could be a great start to a romantic comedy or maybe a horror. It could easily set the tone either way!

Gnomes in protective custody

The creatures vary in sizes and materials and were part of what is believed to be an end-of-the-year prank at Capital High School.

About 20 gnomes were affixed to several locations at the facility, including on the roof, at the end of May.

This one cracked me up because I know kids who would pull this prank. But, what if one of the Gnomes was evil? Or what if one of the kids saw something he shouldn't while sneaking into a garden to steal a gnome?

So, swap with me. What would you do with these? Or your own stories this week? You can check out the comments of yesterday's post for more "icky" stories.

Why I can never do Yoga again

Thinking about Thursday

Why I Can Never Do Yoga Again
Not me.

First of all, HUGE shout out to my Romance Biggest Winner Team ( Fantastic Four) for coming in FIRST PLACE this week! I knew we could do it! You can follow the competition at #RBW. Special thanks to Ashley March for managing the competition. Pssst, you should check out her new book Romancing the Countess.

Anyway, in honor of my team's accomplishment, I wanted to share with you the tragic, yet true story of why I no longer do yoga.  This was originally an email to a friend. I hope it makes you smile this today.  The thought of me doing yoga is pretty entertaining on its own, but I thought you might enjoy my story :)

I used to love Yoga. Do it all the time, really enjoy it, helps keep me less stressed and calm ...but one morning, all that changed!

I got up like normal, laid out my mat, did my little routine with the TV, feeling very calm and centered. Sufficiently balanced to start my day.

Now for those of you who have never done Yoga, it is done barefoot. Just keep that in mind. I finished my routine. Stood up and started to roll up my mat. My mind a million other places... Did I sign that permission form? What time did Scott say he needed to get going this morning?
and the weirdest thought~ Why am I standing on a ice cube??

I stepped on something ice cold in the middle of my carpeted living room floor. I looked down... IT WAS A LIZARD!!!!! A baby gecko... and I stepped on it... BAREFOOT!
It did not look like this!
All balance, centered calmness immediately left my body! I did get some cardio in as I RAN to the bedroom to wake up my loving husband ( Dead lizard removal falls in his skill set, not mine!)

So I am shaking him and swinging my foot around like a cat with tape on its paw, wiping it on everything I can find. " Get up! Get up! I just stepped on a a lizard in the living room. I think I killed it! You have to get up and get rid of it!!!"

Do you know what the manly protector of my household said, "If it is already dead, why do I have to get up right now and get rid of it??"
Not my husband
I can't print what I said back to him because it wasn't very lady like

I ran back into the living room ( More cardio) because I heard my daughter getting up and didn't want her to see the poor squished thing.

IT WASN'T THERE!!!! It had crawled half way across the floor and went it saw me took off and hid.

So while I am grateful that I did not kill it. IT IS STILL LOOSE IN HERE SOMEWHERE!!!

Of course, after Scott refused to help me, I kept hoping it had crawled into his shoe, but no such luck.

Sadly that is why I can never do yoga again... That combined with the fact I plan on having my right foot ( the one that touched it ) surgically removed and replaced with a new one... bathing it in lysol didn't help me much !

Jessica R. Patch

Tell Me Your Story Tuesday

WELCOME

I am so excited to have Jessica on the blog and be able to say: She is represented by
You can pop over to Jessica's Blog and read about how she got her agent( it just happened last week). It is a touching story that will bring tears to your eyes.  She also has a great post titled Top Five Ways I Warped My Little Brother. It will bring tears to your eyes also, but in a different way.

LET'S GET TO KNOW JESSICA!
What made you decide to write?  What did you do before becoming a writer?
First, let me say thank you, Dawn, for having me! I love reading your blog.

I’ve always had a love for making up stories, I would plot and act them out in my bedroom. Growing up, I thought I wanted to be an actress. Later, I realized it wasn’t the acting I loved, but the stories. I wrote several short stories in high school, but it never crossed my mind to be a writer, then. I began writing seriously in 2008.

I worked for a corporate childcare center for 10 years, most of them as the Director.

Tell us about your stories. You call them relevant, provocative stories of inspiration. How does that work?
Mostly those are fancy words to lure you into reading my books! But seriously, (not that I don’t seriously want you to read my books) that simply means they are all contemporary and relatable to today’s group of women who are 20-30& 40-somethings. Relevant.

They aren’t your grandma’s romance. They have just enough heat to keep you hooked and fanning yourself, but not enough to make you hide it in between the bed mattresses for fear your tween might get a hold of it. It’s kind of like a Tango. It’s sensual, fun, captivating, and you get to see it all except the “dip!” wink. wink. That takes place behind closed doors. Provocative.

I write inspirational fiction. My tagline is romantic suspense…overflowing hope. I believe in writing about characters that readers can identify with. Some are Christians, some aren’t. All are flawed.

I want readers who feel like they’re in a sticky situation, or hopeless all together, to be able to find themselves in the story and close the book knowing they don’t have to stay that way. Inspiration.

Do you have any special time management tricks for working in writing time and living a normal life?

I’m blessed to be able to stay at home most of the time. I write while my kids are at school, taking breaks for household stuff. That gives me time to spend with my family in the evenings and on weekends. Occasionally, I write on Saturdays.

What advice do you wish someone would have given you when you were starting out?

Study a few craft books first—there’s more to it than slapping words down on a page. And read blogs on writing/publishing.

What do you do to fight burnout? Do you ever worry about "running out of stories"? How do you combat that?

I don’t ever feel burned out, if anything I feel alive when writing. There are entirely too many things to write about. I’m constantly jotting down ideas. Stories are always there, we just have to let our creativity bring them out in new ways.

Do you ever write material based on your close relationships, such as a best friend?, and how do you balance that material with the need to tell an interesting story?

I wrote a saga and based the 2 main characters on the best qualities of my best friends. I asked permission first. I’m sure some of my conversations, or antics, come out in novels that are based off something I said or did with a friend.

I’ve never written anything personal, like a deep secret or scandal.

What sources do you use for inspiration? ( Music, movies, people watching)

I’m sure besides my own life experiences, I find fodder in many things. People amuse me, conversations I overhear intrigue me, and yes, music. I write with music in my ears. It helps set the mood for me.

My greatest inspiration comes in the quiet mornings when it’s just me and Jesus. Usually, something in scripture will jump off the page and stir a theme, a character, or a particular plot.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?

I’m usually doing something ridiculous with my best friend. She helps me research for writing, and there isn’t much I won’t try. I enjoy going to the movies with my hubby. We love all kinds of movies, so we never argue over what we’ll see. Before we had children, we would go into one movie, come out, and buy tickets for another one. We don’t have that kind of time, or money anymore!

I love playing board games with my kids. Apples to Apples is one of our favorites, or the Wii. Nothing makes me want to wet myself from laughing like watching my 7-year-old son get down on Just Dance 2!
And I like to refurbish furniture. It’s soothing and fun.

Tell us a bit about your work in progress.

I’m working on a third book in a trilogy, spinning off a character from the previous one, but all of them are standalones.

I’d love to tell you what it’s about, but I’m not even sure at the moment. I’m in the early stages, working on fleshing her out and devising a plot.

How can we find out more about you? Blogs? Facebook? Twitter?

You can find me on Facebook at my writer page where I love to ask reader questions and at my personal page.
I’d love to tweet with you! You can find me @jessicarpatch

And come hang out at my blog. We have a lot of fun! http://www.jessicarpatch.blogspot.com/

It was so much fun getting to know you, Jessica!
Thank you so much!

Want to know more about Jessica's writing journey? Or torturing her brother? Or you could just leave her some congratulations for signing with her dream agent.

Friday Plot Swap~ How Bizarre

Dawn's Plot Swap
Have a plot? Leave one
Need a plot ? Take one
A little strangeness to brighten your plots today!
First a little music to get you in the mood.

One of the versions I read said the clerk didn't even know who Gumby was and described it as a "Big Green Spongebob."

Bear Takes Family's Prius for Spin, Leaves It Wrecked

How would you like to have to explain that one to your insurance company? Maybe a good start to a romantic comedy.

Police in Ohio were working Saturday to determine who dumped more than 1,600 pairs of panties by the side of a road...

So many ways this one could go!

So, swap with me! What's going on in your world (real or creative) that could fit into my file of "How Bizarre!"

Are you out?

Thinking about Thursday

Are you out as a writer?

I have close friends. I mean,"on-the-emergency-card-to-pick-the-kids-up-from-school" kind of close friends, who have no idea I am a writer. No clue.
For years, no one knew I was a writer. If I told them there was the danger of someone actually asking to read my work. There was also the danger they would say something like, "That's nice." and change the subject. Both would have been equally horrifying.
The problem is now I am at the awkward stage. I am like an adolescent in the writing world. I am learning everything I can. I am working hard to prove I can do this. But, I get all shy and mumbly when asked to talk about it.
To add to the awkwardness is the "Why didn't you tell me?" factor. Like I said, some of the closest people to me have no idea. How exactly do I break it to them? "Oh, by the way, I have four completed novel-length manuscripts, a blog, author Facebook page and twitter account. What? I haven't mentioned any of that to you before? Weird."

So, where are you? Do you tell everyone you meet you are a writer? Or only a close few? Any suggestions on breaking the news to those who probably should have been told a while back? Do you think it is harder or easier on you for everyone to know?

MY REVIEW:
This is what my copy now looks like.

I definitely enjoyed this book. All of those little flags are next to my own notes which read thing like, "Yes!" or "This!". Kathi Lipp writes with a conversational style. It is easy to picture yourself having this same discussion with friends over coffee and dessert. I wasn't sure how I would feel about a "project" book for a project I didn't even have yet, but I can tell you what drew me in.

"The intention of The Me Project is not to add stress but to lead you to the life you were designed for. Just do something, intentionally, everyday."

That was what I needed hear.

The book is apologetically, faith-based. Each chapter is sprinkled with Bible verses and specific suggestions for prayer. I particularly enjoyed that element. I also appreciated the hands-on, practical steps for working toward your goals while still living your life.

I would absolutely recommend this book to a friend. In fact, I am recommending it to you! More than recommending, I  will send a copy (via Amazon) to a random commenter.
BOOK GIVE AWAY!

Leave a comment before Sept. 12th with your name and the goal you would use The Me Project to achieve. I will choose a winner at random (not based on my opinion of your goal :) ) and announce it on Tell Me Your Story Tuesday, Sept. 13th.
